Medieval Les Arcs

Le Parage – From Romans to Nobility

Les Arcs-sur-Argens has ancient roots, first mentioned as "Archos" in 1010. Under the Romans, it became "Castrum de Arcubus" (Castle of the Arcs).

The crown jewel is the medieval quarter "Le Parage," perched high above the town. The name comes from the Occitan word "paratge" (nobility), reflecting its history as the home of the powerful Villeneuve family. They flourished here from the 12th to 17th centuries, building the castle and church. In 1612, King Louis XIII elevated the town to a Marquisate.

Historic Treasures

Le Parage is encircled by ancient defensive walls and protected by four historic gates: Porte du Réal, Porte Milante, Porte de l'Horloge, and Porte Haute. These gates were once the only entrances to the city, standing today as silent witnesses to a time when the town required fortification.

Although the original castle was largely destroyed following the French Revolution, the "Tour de l'Horloge" (Clock Tower) remains standing proudly. Originally the castle's 14th-century donjon (keep), it was transformed in 1662 into a clock tower featuring a beautiful wrought-iron campanile—a classic hallmark of the Provence region.

Nearby, at the foot of the village, lies the Sainte-Roseline Chapel. This historic monument, dating back to the 11th century, was once part of the La Celle-Roubaud monastery. It is a significant pilgrimage site, housing the incorrupt body of Saint Roseline, preserved in a crystal shrine since 1329. The chapel is also an artistic treasure, adorned with a stunning mosaic by Marc Chagall titled "The Angels' Meal," alongside works by Giacometti and Bazaine.

Modern History & Living Culture

Following the French Revolution, Les Arcs transformed from a silk hub to a center for viticulture. Today, it is the heart of the region's wine industry, hosting the prestigious "Maison des Vins Côtes de Provence", where you can sample over 800 distinct local wines.

The town also honors its WWII legacy. On August 15, 1944, 13 local resistance fighters sacrificed their lives during the liberation of the town, earning Les Arcs the Croix de Guerre with a bronze star.

Thanks to "Les Amis du Parage," the medieval quarter was saved from ruin in the 1960s. The town truly comes alive during the annual "Les Médiévales" festival, transporting visitors straight back to the Middle Ages.
